GLOSSED BIBLE LEAF Ref 230 recto

GLOSSED BIBLE LEAF Ref 230 recto
This large fragment of a leaf is from a Glossed Exodus produced probably in Northern France or possibly England, c. 1150-1175.

The main text is Exodus chapter 8, verse 24 to chapter 9, verse 1. The main text is in the column that is at the inside of the page. The commentary (“Gloss”), that could well be by Gilbert of Poitiers, is in the column to the outside of the page. There is also interlinear gloss to the top half of the recto.

The size of the fragment is 193mm x 179mm (7 6/10ins. x 7 1/20ins.).

PAGE LAYOUT: –
Certain Books of the Bible had “gloss” attached to them from about the second quarter of the twelfth century. Over time, pages were set out in several ways to accommodate the gloss. The layout of this fragment conforms to that of Fig.12 on page 20 of “Glossed Books of the Bible and the Origins of the Paris Book Trade” (C.R.F. de Hamel, 1984). This places the date of the fragment to c.1150-1175 and to the gloss being that of Gilbert de la Porree (Gilbert of Poitiers), i.e. the media glosatura.

GENERAL COMMENTS: –
Whilst the fragment has been used as a pastedown and the top and bottom margins have been cut down, the text is complete and has been written by a very accomplished scribe. Leaves in this format are quite uncommon and the difference in the widths of the columns of main text is most unusual.

GILBERT OF POITIERS: –
(Gilbertus Porretanus)
Bishop of Poitiers, philosopher, theologian and general scholar; b. at Poitiers in 1076; d. in 1154; studied under Hilary in Poitiers, under Bernard of Chartres at the famous school there, and finally under Anselm at Laon, where he probably first met Peter Abelard. Returning later to Chartres, he taught philosophy and the arts there for about fifteen years, receiving a canonry and holding at intervals the office of chancellor of the school. He was present at the Council of Sens (1141), at which Abelard was censured. The following year we find him teaching in Paris, with John of salisbury among his pupils; but only for a brief space, for in 1142 he became Bishop of Chartres. His high character for learning and ecclesiastical zeal seems to have won for him the universal respect and veneration of his contemporaries. But his teaching regarding the Blessed Trinity involved him in trouble for a time. Two of his own archdeacons, alarmed at its novelty, reported it to Eugene III, and induced St. Bernard to oppose Gilbert’s doctrines in the pope’s presence at the Councils of Paris (1147) and Reims (1148). The dispute ended amicably without any very definite issue. Gilbert died universally regretted in the year 1154.

Gilbert wrote much and acquired great fame for his scriptural and Boethian commentaries. The former were the fruit of his years at Laon and included major expositions of the Psalms and of the Epistles of St. Paul, as well as other biblical commentaries that have, with greater or lesser certainty, been ascribed to him. He also left numerous commentaries on various books of the Old and New Testaments.

Kalel presents- my book of awesome bible stories ----
when I was little, my uncle, from my father’s side, gave me a book called "my book of bible stories for children" for my birthday. He was one of those people that didn’t believe in baby jesus or christmas trees, more importantly saint nick! I cannot believe people doubt baby jesus surviving a winter. Walk on water..no problem. Water into wine..no problem. But some snow is going to get in his way? psssh please.
Anyhoo, When my mother saw that it was a non-catholic book, she lost her cool and returned it to my uncle and had a serious discussion about it. It was really a disturbing book with graphic illustrations(cartoons) of Able’s murder, jezebel and some stoning of others.

here is my narration for the story of Lot and the total destruction of Sodom.

Dude upstairs to LOT:
"If you can find 50 awesome bros in Sodom, I will spare it from destruction."

Lot: "I can find 51, dude upstairs."

Lot: " Dude upstairs, this task is a little more difficult than I had anticipated."

Dude upstairs: " If you find me 10 awesome bros in Sodom, I will spare it from destruction.

( an angel with not so enormous wings interrupts)

Angel: "Bro!!! what about that vladolom dude! I’ve heard he is way awesome. He’s so awesome that If you find him, the god of abraham will count him as 50 awesome bros!!!

Lot : He left Sodom a long time ago and is now living in Egypt with the pharaoh’s daughter.

Angel: "niling in the nile? he truly is one awesome bro! Bro, screw it. pack up your stuff and head out of here. But like ace of base…don’t turn around!!!!!!! S*** is about to get real"

the end.
